Vision
To
achieve research excellence on the basis of rigorous theoretical
and quantitative analysis of economic issues affecting the path
of the Pakistani economy. The analysis is to support policy
decisions and we envision disseminating our work in journals
recognized for their international esteem.
Mission
To
undertake research on economic issues so as to increase SBP’s
technical knowledge, and strengthen its institutional research-credibility
through various publications, seminars, and conferences. The
department seeks to interact with international organizations
in such a way to gain visibility and promote dialogue on issues
of mutual interests.
Introduction
Research
Department is one of the core departments of the State Bank
of Pakistan. It helps the management in the process of policy
making by providing in-depth analysis of economy of the country.
It has been entrusted to undertake the following specific functions
a) Explore new avenues for economic research focused on the
Pakistan’s economy within and outside the department;
b) Writing technical and non-technical research papers to support
policy making and promote dialogue;
c) Publishing SBP Research Bulletin (a bi-annual research journal)
and SBP’s Working Paper Series;
d) Organizing two seminar series: a weekly in-house ‘Readers
Forum’ and the occasional ‘Pakistan and the World
Economy Seminar;
e) Organizing an annual conference;
f) Urdu translation of publications including annual and quarterly
reports, monetary policy statements and financial stability
review;
g) Liaising with international financial institutions (like
IMF/World Bank), international organizations (like G-24/SAARCFINANCE)
and providing services to major stakeholders;
h) Serving as SAARCFINANCE Country Cell for Pakistan;
i) Developing general equilibrium models suited for the Pakistan’s
economy.
To carry out these functions, the department is sub-dived into
four divisions each focusing around an appropriately defined
theme.
The Core Research Division
The main objective of the Core Research Division is to broaden
and strengthen the knowledge-base on Pakistan economy in particular
and the world economy in general. To achieve this objective,
the division publishes SBP-Research Bulletin and working papers.
In addition, the division organizes SBP international conference,
Pakistan and the World Economy Seminar Series and monitors outsourced
projects.
Translation
& Research Division
The Translation & Research Division is responsible for disseminating
SBP research publications in the national language so as to
enhance public awareness about economic and financial issues.
This objective is achieved by bringing out high-quality translation
of SBP research and its major policy announcements in national
language. Original articles on economic issues in Urdu are also
written and get published in newspapers.
MDBs/IFIs
Coordination Division
The prime objective of the Division is to facilitate the management
in the decision-making through candid feedback on issues related
to coordination with international organizations/fora like IMF/World
Bank/G-24/SAARCFINANCE, etc. as well as providing coordination/liaison
services to the internal/external stakeholders. Another important
segment of the functioning of the division consists of serving
as the SAARCFINANCE Country Cell for Pakistan.
Economic
Modeling Division
The goal of this division is to strengthen the technical capability
of the SBP to support policy decisions. To achieve this objective,
the division endeavors to develop economic models suited to
Pakistan’s economy with a particular focus on micro-founded
general equilibrium models. It also aims to estimate and simulate
these models so that different scenarios can be built to assess
implications for policy makers.
